The Indian Pacific train works its way 5000km from Perth to Sydney, on the other side of Australia. Here it’s stopped in the township of Cook.

A few weeks later, I’m in New Zealand, and catching a train out of Christchurch through farmland.

 The farmland soon gives way to mountains – the Southern Alps, which the train winds through for nearly 4 hours.

 The west coast of New Zealand features several glaciers, such as the Franz Josef Glacier, one of the few growing glaciers in the world today.

In the centre of New Zealand’s South Island are many large lakes. This is Lake Wanaka.

The highest mountain in New Zealand is Mt. Cook, here overseen by Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest (and presumably this one too).

Just over these mountains is the Tasman Sea off the west coast of the country. Clouds seem to fall over the ridge and into this valley.
